Maison de la Mer
The port of Locquémeau is a mixed marina for pleasure boating and fishing. The yachting section, managed by the town council, is an organized mooring zone. It is also a market for shellfish harvesters.
Clearly visible opposite the fishing port, the Maison de la Mer, opened in 2009 at the request of professionals, has a dual function.
It houses two cold rooms provided by the Côtes d'Armor Chamber of Commerce and Industry, one dedicated to fish and the other to shellfish.
In addition, it has six fish tanks shared by professional foot fishermen.
Here, they re-soak clams, both European and Japanese, collected in a wide variety of locations, from the Guer banks at Yaudet and Goas Treiz in Trébeurden to Mont Saint Michel.
They also stock cockles fished mainly in the Tregorrois beds.
Fish and shellfish landed and stored at Locquémeau are sent several times a week to the Saint-Quay Portrieux fish auction, where they are sold.
Direct sales of shellfish are forbidden at the Maison de la Mer, so fishing products are marketed exclusively by licensed professionals.
Today, although the fleet has dwindled to just a few boats, fishing boats continue to be one of the town?s main attractions. In summer, they fish for the main local species: sea bass, monkfish, sole, pollack, skate, bream and mackerel, as well as lobster, shrimp, spider crab and the crab known here as "dormeur".
The Maison de la Mer is not open to the public; it is a building reserved for professionals.
The fish market, where local fishermen sell their products directly, is open according to their schedules:
-Wednesdays and Fridays from 4pm to 6pm (from mid-April) = mussel sales
-Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 4pm to 7pm = sale of fish products
-Saturday mornings = sale of fish products
