La vallée du Doré

The Vallée du Doré takes its name from the river that formed it, once reputed for its gold-bearing bedrock. No significant quantity of gold was found, however, despite the efforts of numerous amateur prospectors.

The river cuts its way through the valley, forming a granite chaos downstream from the stone bridge that serves as the entrance to the site. The Pont-Croix is a granite bridge with arches, and the notches visible on its sides bear witness to the presence of ancient wooden sluice gates. The pond thus formed regulated the flow of the river, which in turn fed two grain mills located further along the river. It was also used by the children of Rostrenen, who came here to learn how to swim, equipped with a vechen, a bundle of rushes they made on the spot to use as a buoy.

A path runs alongside the river to an ancient Roman bridge spanning the watercourse.
