2000 years of history pleasantly told

Yohann Abiven, Abbey Director

What adventures!

2000 years of history, or almost, in great strides, to look back on the key moments, the vicissitudes of the Abbey of Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer, or should we say the monastery of Landouar, which has seen bearded Brittons, blood-hungry Vikings, builders of dykes and fisheries, determined Jansenists, intelligent Mauritians, revolutionaries without terror, customs officers never there, radical philosophers, a historian on punishment, schoolteachers in and out of costume, restless Belgian soldiers and, in the end, phew!, a few quiet ladies.

The establishment's current Director, Yohann Abiven, author of several historical notes on the Abbey, welcomes you to the gardens for guided tours with commentary. He will describe the adventures of this piece of land in the light of a larger history, that of the metamorphoses of the Christian West, and will detail the challenges now facing the Abbey, an enterprise inspired by a thousand-year-old project of hospitality, and the obstacles to be overcome in order to embark on another 2000 years of history.

Most of the tour takes place in the gardens, to better appreciate the different architectural moments of the establishment. At the end of the tour, we venture into the Abbey's two most emblematic spaces: its chapel and crypt.

Meet at the Main House entrance (near the well).
