Le marais de Magoar-Penvern
In the heart of the Montagnes Noires, the Glomel regional nature reserve covers more than 100 hectares, spread over two distant sites: Penvern and Magoar. The area is home to a rare mosaic of wetland environments: peat moors, oligotrophic meadows, acidic low marshes, acidophilous oak groves and megaphorbia with luxuriant tall grasses.
At Penvern, a 1.2 km embankment path takes you through these living landscapes, between mown, grazed or temporarily flooded marshes. At Magoar, only accessible in summer during guided tours, marshes at the head of the watershed play an essential role in flood regulation.
This complex, fragile and rich environment is home to remarkable biodiversity, including insects, amphibians and protected plants. Without human intervention - mowing, grazing, maintenance of embankments and ditches - these landscapes, shaped for centuries, would have gradually disappeared under afforestation and drainage.
