If the Jaudy was once an invasion route, today it is a migration route for fish (salmon, trout and sea lampreys, in particular) and the estuary is known for its ecological wealth. It is classified thanks mainly to its importance in terms of bird migration and the presence of the European otter. The salt meadows and the mudflat are home to a diverse avifauna: waders, ducks, gulls and seagulls benefit from an abundant food supply and the proximity to the breeding colonies between the Seven Islands and the Bréhat Archipelago. The winged star of the Jaudy estuary is surely the Belon's Shelduck, an original duck. It nests in the burrows borrowed from certain mammals, which earned it the nickname of land goose. Its highly contrasting plumage makes it recognizable. It is present in the estuary a good part of the year, between January and September.
