The construction of the Nantes-Brest canal was a titanic task, both in terms of the excavation work and the engineering required.

The steep gradients around Glomel, the highest point of the canal, posed a major challenge, which was resolved by the installation of a lock ladder between Paule and Glomel. the ladder, an important structure on the Nantes-Brest canal, comprises 15 locks over 4 kilometers. Here, each gate serves the downstream and upstream locks.
